Of the 17,000 attorneys who have sought to transfer the lawsuit over nearly a decade, Reuters found that Only 66 represent nearly half of the petitions awarded. In other words, for every 200 attorneys who ask the Supreme Court to hear their cases, one of those attorneys is nearly as likely to file a case on the bar as the other 199 attorneys combined.
Chief Justice John Roberts is only the most decorated member of this rare cast. Others include former attorneys general and appellate stars with a sparkling CV with elite schools, prestigious writing, and marquee law firms.
Agents demand that these wonders be represented in the Supreme Court. But does the demand for their services reflect a better advocacy? Or is their glittering reputations and easy banter with judges simply allowing them to pick stronger cases and craft arguments for the tastes of an elite court on equal footing?
Equally important, even if these star stars shine, aren’t some others as good?
To help answer these questions, I reviewed 1,122 merit-stage summaries of the 2019 period. To reduce the effects of selection bias and limitations on profit and loss records, I obtained it CV Scores in every summary. The algorithms are derived from AI analysis of thousands of first-class legal documents and judicial opinions, all of which were published long before 2019.
It divided 1,122 summaries into three groups based on attorney registrations:
- Elite (ranked in Chambers & Partners, Law360, etc.)
- Office of the General Counsel
- No one else
She then ranked each group by degree of readers ’engagement, and is a weighted compound CV Result developed by factor analysis:
The results also show, although both “Elite” and “Other” summaries received a wide range of scores, the “Elite” scores skewed higher. On the other hand, only 20% of “elite” summaries scored below the “other” average. On the other hand, however, 25 percent of “other” notes scored above the average for “elite” briefs, and 5 percent scored more than a full standard deviation above this average.
Here “Not the elites but just as good or better than the elites?”
